Let's play "guess the diagnosis" on my 2016 TH Transmission

Driving along to day at about about 17.2K miles and bam something doesn't shift right, it feels BAD, and then the dash lights up with service transmission.

Drove straight to the dealer stuck in 3rd gear. I was afraid to shift into N or turn it off, and I was right. Once it went into Park they couldn't get it out and had to put it into towing Neutral to move it.

Their code reader showed 1 An issues shifting into 3rd, and 2 Reverse gear not available.

I probably have the wording slightly wrong.

So here I am thinking that since I bought a 2016 which is AFTER they supposedly fixed all the transmission issues in 15 that I would be fine.

Well, not so much.

So here's your chance to guess what they say is wrong specifically. Is it a control module, the Trans itself, something else?

Two things what's your build date and if it was the physical transmission, the system would not have locked it out to prevent damage.

My opinion, TCM, there was an update, don't have the date, haven't had it done myself, that could have either caused or could have prevented the issue.

Course the whole thing could have grenaded then you get a new transmission.

Oh forgot a possibly important piece of info.

Prior to this from day 1 this car has averaged 15-19 mpg. It gets 19 on a fresh tank with a reset on the counter and going full tank at highway normal speeds.

I mentioned this to them on a prior visit they said "Couldn't reproduce" except the car had the same gas and same miles on it when I got i back, so they didn't even check it.

Another possibly related item, and maybe this is just normal. This car sometimes goes into 4th and won't leave it no matter the rpms when going up a long hill.

don't know the build date, but got the car in May. I don't think it was built in 2015 if that's the question.

Look on the door panel, when you get it back, there's a sticker with the information for the vehicle including a 6 digit number which is the month/day/hour it was completed for assembly.

Mine is a 11/14/2015 build date with just over 15K on the clock and only have had minor bumps in transmission but, nothing major.

Also I get 18-19 in the city and at least 25 to 27 on the highway, record is 29.

I drove all the way to colorado. tons of that was full tank of gas over mostly flat terrain. Never cracked 18.5. But that was with the rack and a couple suitcases. Nothing too extreme in the weight category.

Even with the rack and stuff you should still be getting at least the low 20's on the highway. My 29 mpg was going up to and back to the Blue Ridge Mountains. Yeah the downhill run probably helped for the 29 but, did a run to the Outer Banks in November, right after and oil change and, got 27 on a flat, windy, headwinds mostly, for that trip.

Starting to think that the you got one of the last of the bad batches of transmissions, somehow, the new one, if done, should be a remarkable improvement. If not your TCM is really performing out of program and needs replacement or reprogramming but, that should have hiccuped way before now to get a reboot or replacement.

Update. They said it was an internal component in the transmission. A valve sleeve or valve cover?

Jeep is telling them to replace it and retest.

Should I be ok with that or raise **** for a new transmission?
