Video Series On The ZF 9spd Transaxle

Hello,

First off, I just noticed after all of this time we have this section of the Forum incorrectly named. We have a transaxle, not a transmission. Secondly, here is over an hour and a half of videos by a great instructor explaining, in detail, the gear functions inside the ZF 9spd transaxle.

I hope you enjoy these. If people have questions about how the dog clutches and gears work, just refer them to this post.

I don't have time to look at that now--but think it is the same one i looked at about year ago unless this is newer. From the one I watched the transmission looks like it is well built despite the problems we customers have had with it especially in the first two years.

Excellent videos. Thank you for sharing. The Title is correct in the third video: transmission. It does not become a transaxle until the final drive is bolted to it. ZF makes the transmission and possibly also makes the front differential for some applications, other than Jeep. In the case of our Cherokee, American Axle makes our entire drivetrain. I believe that the front differential is referred to as the PCM; or the front differential is between the transmission and the PCM (it is hard to tell from the pictures on American Axle's Web Site: the front 1/2 shafts do exit from the PCM): one speed for ADI and 2-speed for ADII and ADLock. Thus, we have a ZF designed transmission; not a transaxle. I have no clue why the narrator got this wrong. I do not know who makes the front differential for the FWD versions. If ZF makes it and it arrives at the factory as a complete unit, then it is a transaxle. There are 3 huge buildings in Kokomo, IN. The FWD transaxles could be assembled in one of these buildings and delivered to the assembly plant as one unit. And, I do not know where the PCM (and, or the front differential) is bolted to the transmission in the production process. Confusing.

Realizing the alphabet soup used in today's systems can result in the same series of letters describing more than one thing, the PCM (Powertrain Control Module) is a computing device controlling the engine's ignition system. You might be referring to the PTU (Power Transfer Unit) which bolts onto the transaxle. In the 4x4, engine power flows through the torque converter to the transmission and across the PTU into the front differential and out the half shafts to the wheels. When 4x4 is engaged the PTU shifts a sleeve or dog clutch to also send power to the prop shaft and thus back to the RDM (Rear Drive Module).

The reason it's referred to as a transaxle is because the front differential bolts onto the transmission as does the PTU in the 4x4. The Cherokee service manual refers to it as a transaxle too:

15. Remove the bolts holding the PTU to the transaxle.

Thanks for posting those Mudman1. I subscribe to WeberAuto. Professor John D. Kelly has posted many awesome videos on transmissions/drivelines, etc. I'll throw up the following video on the disassembly of the 9-speed by Ray's Garage. It even shows the removal of the infamous C-Clutch snap ring. While watching this disassembly it's easy to imagine an alien race dropped this thing in Roswell and us humans just figured out what it does. How do engineers do this???

Extremely informative. Really enjoyed these. But he didn't convince me that it should't be called a transmission -- it still transmits the engine power to the axles. :-)
