Aftermarket rims

Hey everyone, I have a 2015 TH. I want to get new rims and tires. Looked thru some other posts and think 265/65r17 is as big as I can go w/out lifting or trimming.

Haven't seen much about getting new rims. The 5x110 bolt pattern really limits choices. The ones I like are 17x9" with a 15mm offset and a blank bolt pattern. All the 'experts' are telling me that the difference in offset will be a problem. But, going from the stock rim width of 7.5" w/a 35 mm offset to a 9" w/a 15 mm offset provide almost the exact same backspace.

Any thoughts? What am I missing?

Thank you,
Luke

Hey Luke,

This is just my opinion on your situation. You are probably correct about the backspace being close (I haven't done the math - trusting you here). The thing about offset is not only about backspace, it's more about wheel position relatively to the hub. Having 20mm less offset than *recommended* means the center of the tire sits 20mm (a little more than 3/4") more out. This adds strain on the suspension/steering. But all things being relative, this 3/4" move out is directly comparable to adding a 20mm spacer, which other members have done (up to 1" IIRC, maybe 1.25" but not 100% sure here).

We've recently discussed the use of spacers, and one observation that popped up was... lower ball joint resilience on the KLs, which is kinda poor. Moving a tire out only adds more stress and may shorten ball joint life even more.

So my opinion : you can go with those wheels. The tires will stick out 30mm more than stock (20mm on the offset and 265 minus 245 divided by 2 for tire width = 10mm).
But... what impact will it have on the suspension/steering components ? Hmm...

Hey Luke,

Rim width here is fine, considering your choice of tires. For example, Tire Rack shows specs for all the tires they sell, and recommended rim width is one of them. Let's look at the Duratrac 265-65/17 :
https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tire...tireModel=Wrangler+DuraTrac&partnum=665SR7WDT

>> Click on the "Specs" tab and you'll see rim width range is 7.5" to 9.5".

However, you couldn't mount the stock 245-65/17 Destination A/Ts on 9" rims, because rim width range for those tires is 7" to 8.5" (link : https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tire...Model=Destination+A/T&partnum=465TR7DESTATOWL )

With 30mm more tires sticking out, you'll likely be throwing road debris up in the air, as well as dirt on the paint job...

If you don't mind the risk ($$) of straining suspension/steering components with improper offset, you should be fine...
