Handbrake

Well, after 19 months ownership, had my first major issue. Noticed on Saturday that a warning was displayed, "Service Handbrake". Car drove as usual and with a service due very soon, thought I'd leave it till then. Woops. Started car on Sunday, and could not get the handbrake to disengage. Tried restarting the vehicle, opening and shutting doors etc, no go. Rang Jeep assist and they responded pretty quickly, but the service guy was unfamiliar with the model and spent some time looking for the manual override, which, it appears, doesn't exist. According to the book, he had to then remove the brake actuators(?) from the back wheels, which freed up the wheels so it can be now dragged on to a tilt tray. Anyone come across this particular failure? I can't recall seeing it reported since I've been on the site.

Havent seen the issue, but there is a service over ride in the uconnect menu which may work.

Not as disappointing as Jeep's response, my usual dealership said don't bother bringing it in for at least 2 weeks as they are busy, try another one. I did, they said don't bother bringing it in for at least 1 week. I'm not sure if this means, A/ They've sold a lot of Jeeps and having trouble coping, B/ They haven't sold many Jeeps but they keep breaking down, or C/ The Jeep Service Division is under staffed and, sorry, you're gonna have to wait, not our problem.

Car is out front, so no problem there. The tow was only going to be to the closest service centre and, as it was Sunday, I held off until I had spoken to the dealership I usually deal with. Lucky I did as I rather have it sitting here than on the side of the street outside a service yard I had never dealt with, which is where it would have been left.

In Uconnect Settings under Safety & Driving Assistance there is the Electric Park Brake Service Mode control:

This feature provides a means for a technician or vehicle
owner to utilize a vehicle integrated, menu driven system,
to command the electric park brake retraction, to
service the rear foundation brakes (brake pads, calipers,
rotors, etc.).

That works if the electric park brake control module and 2 motor gear units are functioning.

Thanks for that, the service guy has removed the 2 motor gear functions to release the brakes. Jeep don't have their own on road service technicians and use a third party to do the breakdowns. He had no idea about the U-connect and was looking for an override switch. I now know to come to this site with a breakdown for the correct advice, thanks again.

Update. According to the service guy, the handbrake sensor is located in the spare wheel well, which they found to be full of water. No idea how that happened, we did have torrential rain a few days before the issue poked its head up, but I didn't see anything to suggest the car had leaked anywhere. Service guy is leaning towards blocked drain holes in the sunroof but I didn't have any other symptoms to suggest this was the culprit, like wet floor etc. I know there was a recall for water getting into the back hatch and causing problems, maybe that was it. The part required isn't in Australia at present and may take at least 2 weeks to get here.
Here we go, I'm thinking, all the Jeep service complaints I read about may have some traction. I then read that Jeep sales are down 50% in Australia and my heart sank a bit lower. Last night I received a call from a car rental company. They are delivering, to my door, a hire car to use while my car is out of service. When my car is ready, I can drop it at the dealership and they will pick it up and I drive my car home. That is great I thinks, I can deal with a Corolla or Hyundai in the interim.
A brand new Chrysler Pimp model, sorry, 300C, turned up this morning.
How good is that!
Cars have problems and things can go south after that, like no parts in the country, the company's response is how you judge them.
I still love my Jeep, and more than happy with the way they are handling this.
