CA and NV: Looking for end-of-year roadtrip buddies!

A day or two or three after Xmas I want to go on a short road trip, just me and my dog in my truck, light overlanding, and do either some camping or stay at small hotels near cool sights. Not sure how many nights. 1 to 4.

I live in the Bay Area and go to Tahoe every week, the path I take makes it ~700 miles a week, so I'm no stranger to long trips and adventure. (And staying safe and being prepared!)

I was thinking of heading up to Black Rock Desert to camp on the playa and check out the abandoned ghost towns, but after some research it seems temperatures can drop below 0 and mud an become an issue in early Jan. So scratch that.

I'm open to idea though! Very flexible!

Some ideas:

- San Luis Obispo (Can drive on the ocean beach at Oceano Dunes SVRA and it's not too cold!!!)
- Mojave National Preserve
- Joshua Tree National Park
- Arlington Mine, Near the Colorado River Valley (light offroading required, nothing extreme)
- Anza Borrego Desert State Park
- Owens Valley
- Moabi Regional Park
- Colorado River Valley
- Mendocino (I know some good spots)
- Eureka
- Six Rivers National Forest
- Los Padres National Forest

I also know of EIGHT beaches in NorCal you can camp/drive on.

I hope someone will hit me up! Let's have an adventure.

One route that popped into my mind that I'll probably end up doing solo if no one is interested in a roadtrip is Bay Areea, stop at Hollister Hills SVRA (Free) on the way to camp at Pinnacles National Park ($23). There one night, then to Pismo Beach to camp on the beach ($10). Then head up the coast and stay in an inn at Big Sur ($150) -- or I know of some cool cabins ($70).

I checked all the permits, plenty of room. Low cost trip, lots of fun! Anyone? :-)

Woah, so many coincidences...I live in San Luis Obispo, spent a year living in SF, just went to the Pinnacles last Saturday, went to Joshua Tree at the end of last October, stayed on Naciemento Road near big sur last summer, and am familiar with (and been wheelin around) Pismo Beach and most other off road spots along the Central Coast!haha If you want a tour guide for your stop in my neighborhood feel free to hit me up

Oh I would love to take you up on that offer! Any interest in camping at Oceano Dunes around that time?

Another incentive to join along people! :-)

Might also consider Death Valley, though that would be more of a drive, but lots of exploring to do.

If you're coming north Hwy 1, about a mile north of Big Sur River Inn, the pavement bends to the left, but if you go straight, it's a dirt road up the hill.... Old Coast Road. Take that. It will take a bit longer, but is a far more interesting route, though I have not been through since the Sobranes Fire which burned through there. It will drop you back on Hwy1 at the Bixby Bridge.

I was a good kid, now I'm making up for it....

Won't be able to camp myself, but I'll be available to get some off roading hours in if you end up around this way

Would you like to meet up on the 28th? Could just do some light wheeling and lunch or something?
