Question Custom Hood Decal NON Vinyl

Was thining about creating a custom hood decal for my latitude, something with elevation lines. My KL is Granite gray, so I'm thinking matte black base, then over that with gray leaving a black pin stripe border, on top of the gray I was thinking of custom elevation lines in a similar blue as the latitude badge lettering.

Thoughts?

Has anyone plasti-dipped a hood decal on their Cherokee? would like to know how it went as I'm not sure about which dimensions I'll use and masking along the hood ridge etc.

Something like this:

Either flip the coloring for the lines and lettering

Plastic dip isn't going to hope up too good when you wash the car ... I'd give it a month and most of the plastic dip would be gone.

On the other hand , I could do this print in vinyl .

PlastiDip would hold up fine, the worst part about doing something like this would be getting everything taped up perfectly symmetrical. I've done stripes before on my motorcycle, and they held up great after multiple washes, the biggest thing to remember is to pull of the tape when the dip is still wet otherwise it'll peel up when you peel the tape.

Thats strange , the plastic dip I used will rub off with my fingers if I wanted too .. cant imagine a hand wash.

As far as the lines go , all you need to do is use a vinyl plotter to get the lines. For me I would put the lines over top of the image in my software and compound then into the hood decal. Maybe I can show an example..

Thanks for the replies guys,

I know plasti dip will hold out for a good long while, even under heavy washes. My brother plasti dipped racing stripes on his Dart. didn't really do a good job but the plasti dip has held on. he also did is wheels.

The major problem ptrudel pointed out is taping off symmetrically.

I'm considering purchasing a black out decal, then plasti dipping over it lol - note I realize this sounds idiotic when I can have the entire design printed - but thinking for a moment, what if i don't really like how the design came out? simply peel the plastidip portion off and do something different instead of wasting an entire vinyl decal.

I'm willing to do some testing on various methods also - flexible acrylic in between layers of clear plastidip, paper stencils in between layers to give depth etc - I've already tried painting a jeep logo on black plasti dip with blue acrylic paint then applying clear plasti dip over it with success - I'm a bit artistic but painting with acrylic and getting lines just right may be a pain.

anyway
