Roof Box Fuel Economy

Hey,
I drive a '16 Trailhawk with the V6, tech package, towing package, etc. Have not done any mods with the exception of aftermarket headlights. I am going on a road trip this summer and am wondering what kind of fuel economy I could expect to get with a thule enclosed roof box on. I will be driving interstate the whole time (80 mph) and the car will be loaded up with driver plus three people and a bunch of camping gear (maybe 1000lbs total of gear and passengers). Does anybody have experience with doing something like this and want to share their fuel economy figures?

Also, I may be putting on one of those trailer hitch cargo platforms on the back for more storage space. Anybody have any experience with those and how they effect ride quality/fuel economy/noise/etc?

Any feedback would be amazing! Thanks!

Just be aware, the weight limit of the Cherokee with cargo, passengers and everything is only 925lbs. Anything over that and you risk going of the legal limit of the Cherokee and it'll handle softly. With that said, I drive around everywhere I go with about 1800lbs of gear so this of don't do as I do. I averaged 16mpg when I do my trips, even with a basket on the rear.

Storm chasing and I do search and rescue work. So the jeep is always packed and ready to go.

The hitch platform should be less MPG impactful. I'd expect at least -2mpg on the roof carrier.

Although at 80mph the mpg will suffer so much maybe I should go with a percentage., because if you are only getting 18mpg it would push you down less than if you are getting 24mpg normally.

(does that make sense)

don't have any numbers for you, sorry. but the KL is awesome loaded up for road trips. put the heavy stuff in the car, the bulky stuff on the hitch carrier & roof basket

college move-home day last May

5 people, 4 bikes & summer luggage for a week on the Vineyard, last June. virtually, no sag

tire pressure will rise. you need maximum pressure for maximum loading, but keep an eye on it just in case it's a hot day. I think I may have let a cpl lbs out once we got going

It dramatically improves rear visibility. But I actually borrowed that from my father in law. Below is what I'll use in the future. It's my late wife's powerchair lift. So I can lift the 200lb box with the lift and it has a taillight and license plate mount. Also, it's got a swing away bracket so I can still get the lift gate open.
