Hi All, great to be joining the Jeep Cherokee Club. My name is Bruce Lawrence and live in Elliot Lake, Ontario, Canada.

I have a 2016 Cherokee Limited 4WD with the Luxury Group, Trailer Tow Group, 3.2L V-624V VVT w/ESS power train and 9 speed auto trans with Jeep Active Drive 1.

Looking for advice on trailer towing. I would like to tow my sports car (1900 lbs) on a light weight open car hauler (1840 lbs) for a total estimated 3740 lbs. The manual states I can safely to 4500 lbs but doesn't mention anything about shifting mode.
I do have an equalizer hitch for the trailer and the vehicle has trailer sway dampening, an engine oil cooler, heavy duty engine cooling, an auxiliary transmission oil cooler, trailer towing harness and a class 3 hitch.

My questions are; Can I safely tow the 3740 pound load with the equipment mentioned above and since there is no "tow mode" selector or electric brake switch how would I or do I need to lock out the overdrive gears?

Your advice and experience will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Bruce

Hi Bruce, welcome to JCC and congrats on your Limited. One of the nice things about our KLs is the fact that you don't 'need' a towing mode...it's pretty well baked in.

The trans will not shift up into gears is doesn't need, i.e. you won't see 9th while towing as the computer takes into account the weight, drag, etc from the responses of all the electronics built in.

In higher elevations on descent, you can manually downshift with the ERS if you feel the need to use more engine braking.

As far as electric brakes, if your trailer has brakes, you need to provide your own controller. I do not have one as my two trailers are lighter and I only tow very heavy rental equipment with it's own surge brakes.

There are lots of members here who tow regularly and some right at the limit, so you will get lots of good advice I'm sure.
