Rear Cargo Carpet (Quick DIY Project)

I have done this in a previous Jeep and my Golf Wagon. It takes roughly 15 minutes, looks professional, and makes access to the spare tire area easy:

  • Go to your local hardware store and look for a black "Utility Mat" with rubberized backing.
  • Find one that is 4'x3' or larger (i.e. 4'x4' or 4'x6')
  • You want the rubberized backing to protect against spills should you end up carrying something wet.
  • Look for Black with lighter flecks, these seem pretty standard and somewhat easy to find (it also perfectly matches the interior). I have seen them for between $15-$20, cheaper if your lucky.
  • Once at home flip the mat rubber side up and mark it to the dimensions shown below. (see picture) The fewer cuts the better, consider using a straight edge like a metal ruler if you have one available.
  • Using a good pair of scissors or alternatively a utility knife cut to size.
  • The most challenging cut is the slightly rounded edge, however cut it larger, then trim after test fitting a couple times in your cargo area if you are worried.
The nice thing about these is they allow easy cleaning (remove and shake off), you can even hose them down if something really crazy happens. You can also lift them and quickly gain access to the spare tire area (some folks use that to store odds/ends).

Yes, that is almost exactly what I used. You can trim off the rubber boarder and then trim to size.

I picked up the mat at Lowes, was $16 and change with taxes added. It's exactly as I expected it to be. The weather was a bit icky and I didn't feel like screwing with it, so I tossed it on the hardwood next to an area rug just to have it "out of the way."

Turns out my girlfriends cat's love it. They basically sit on that 4x3' mat and roll and play and sleep. Who knew? Lol.

May have to get a new mat for the TH.

You can do the same with a $9.88 rubber mat from Home Depot
