I had the same problem occur twice in a year for more than 2 years, and I believe it is due to the weather changes, I take it to the dealer, they lubricate the seals (especially the rear panel rear section) and the problem disappears for around 6 months before reappears.

Okay! After reading all of these horror stories about dealerships, I came to the conclusion I need to take care of these noises myself, So thank you for this post! I have two areas of noise... The front sunroof clunks and shifts, on the right side I believe... the whole loosening and shifting thing will be my attempt to fix that noise.... I have the "creaking" sound along the left side of the rear moon roof piece as well.... when you said you lubricated all the seals with the aerospace lube, you meant the outside seal correct?? I have been doing that for months now, it usually works at taking away the "creak" for a while, but I will use the stuff you mentioned instead of the silicone lube I have been using. I love this vehicle, but it has gotten cold here now and the two areas of noise are driving me insane, making my jeep hard to love... I have printed your post off and will attempt these fixes asap...

I love my dealer... they have always fixed the issue 1st time and have yet to give me a hard time or mess anything up. They are quick too! Faricy Boys in Colorado Springs is great!

I, too, have developed an irritating squeak. I never noticed it until I folded the rear seats to haul something. Now the seats are up, and the squeak started. It sounds like the seat vibrating on its latch. Now, after reading this, I'll fool with the sunroof. But, I only hear it in my right ear, and it sounds as if it is coming from behind me.

Hi dhh3,
I have found a Technical Service Bulletin that may assist you with this concern:

NUMBER: 23-028-16
GROUP: Body
DATE: June 11, 2016
SUBJECT:
Rattle/Squeak From Rear Seat Armrest
SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
The customer may describe a rattle from the 60% portion of the rear seat. Metal to metal
contact may be heard in either area.

You can provide this TSB number, 23-028-16 and your VIN number to your certified dealer, who will be able to best assess if this is a relevant bulletin to your vehicle and if any future steps are necessary. Please let me know if I can be of any further assistance.

Sorry for not coming back sooner. The dealership ordered an entire new interior head liner/panel. I also believe I may have had one cracked mounting bracket. The new head liner was installed, and all the mounting points were checked/tightened/repaired. It has been over 3 months, and I do not have any sound coming from the roof. Again, the local Jeep dealership was extremely professional during this entire time. They stuck with the problem until it was resolved. Hope this helps someone else.

After a lot of experimentation on different fixes I found a 2 part solution that has for the past 3 weeks completely cured the rattle (which began when it got cold back in October.)

First, all the rubber seals on the sunroof was dried out, so as others on here suggested I lubed all the seals with 303 Aerospace protectant and it made a big difference. Probably 50-75% of the noise. But then the rattle started coming back and got loud again. After trial and error I realized that it was the front rubber seal on the front glass that was making noise against the metal as the front glass pane was moving. I found I could push up on the front corner of the front sunroof glass and hear the noise even though the seal was lubed.

So there are (6) T25 torx screws that hold the front sunroof on and they are hidden being the accordion rubber on each side of the sunroof. You can pop the accordion rubber pieces off starting at the rear bottom edge. I then barely loosened the (2) frontmost torx screws on each side of front panel and ever so slightly pushed the front edge of the sunroof down. It felt like it seated itself better and after tightening the screws i was not able to move it as much as before when i pushed on it.

To confirm that I was still leak free after my adjustment I had my wife (who thinks I'm crazy and just turns up the radio when she hears a rattle) dump a few gallons of water on each of the seals while I looked for leaks inside the car and there were none.

This has so far completely fixed my rattle. It was very easy to do but you probably take some risk in regard to leaks in adjusting the panel position like I did. But I did not want to get a whole sunroof frame replacement and so far this has worked 100%.

I did this today and it improved my situation by about 95%. I'm glad to know I'm in the right location now so I can finally fix it. Of note, the rubber accordion thing is easily deformed making it difficult to push back on. I took it off much more carefully the second time and didn't have a problem. It also looks like it would be easy to possibly let the sunroof glass sit to far down into the roof body while adjusting it.
