Every car I've bought (In Montana) the dealer would run it through the wash and fill up the tank. In the grand scheme of things they "loose" what, $25 on a $30,000 sale? lol
strictly being devil's advocate here for a moment, but a $30,000 sale does not mean a $30,000 profit. most dealers in my area typically sell their cars (especially KLs) thousands below invoice, resulting in a legitimate loss when selling the car. thus, spending $25 or more on gas when you're already losing on the sale does indeed add up.

I always wondered about this. Why would you sell the car at a loss? I assume you mean while selling under the "invoice," manufacturer incentives and rebates make up that loss. Otherwise you would have to completely depend on you service Dept and Preowned sales to remain solvent, which I'm sure they are a major part of any dealers revenue stream either way.

Nope, not what I meant at all. Dealers in my area (including my own) routinely sell new vehicle for thousands under invoice. It's the market in the MD/DC/VA area.

Auto franchises are complicated financial animals. My friend who works at a Honda dealership tells me that there is a "manufacturer holdback" that the dealer gets no matter who much the car is sold for.

When we were deciding on the 6cyl or 4-banger and were test driving, It was important that I was happy with the start-stop functionality. Unfortunately, by the time the engine was at full temp and the battery was charged, there wasn't enough fuel for the feature to work. The dealer we work with put enough fuel in for us to test it out even though we had no intention of getting that KL (We wanted to order). I thought this was nice. They also put a fair amount of effort into finding us money in spite of the fact I already supplier discount. They ended up knocking another 4k off of my supplier price. When we took delivery they did not fill the tank, but I'm not complaining. They made and make up for this in other ways. I tend to complain a lot about dealers and their techs, but ours really hasn't done anything to deserve it. The parts guys are about as sharp as boiled onions, but nice and work hard. They also work magic for me on part pricing.
