Question Current Gear

Is it possible to display the current gear number instead of the D without going into ERS?

In the DID no matter what I set the Current Gear option to, On or Off, nothing changes.

No.

Turning it on in the options menu means it will show when you activate ERS. So all you do is activate ERS and push it up to 9th and then let the transmission work its magic with the display telling you what gear you are in.

I find it annoying that software updates like that are not backdated to earlier models

Ditto!! You can only see it in ERS mode and only for a 2016 or higher for which you already have a '16, sorry @David_Baker. You are right they should back in those type of updates.

That's exactly what I was thinking, this should be a simple thing to add in.

We've speculated on this before. The ZF9 is a different beast... and 9th gear is practically a no show for Cherokees, especially those with the V6. Having current gear showing would mean more people noticing... they are in fact driving an 8-speed (practically speakeing of course)

I have a 2016 trailhawk v6 what is ers mode. I was driving over hover dam last week shifting and the highest number my display would show is 5th. How many miles do I need to get some mpg. I have 350 miles and I get 16 city and 22.4 hiway. My city mileage is dropping I was a 19 2 days ago.

ERS is *Electronic Range Select" : Transmission ERS mode...

Complete break-in for your TH could take a few thousand miles. Give or take.
And if you drive on mountain roads much, expect lower fuel mileage, especially with a V6 TH.

I still think that my service manager took me for a ride in his TH earlier in the year and it showed the current gear without going to ERS. ( I was seeing the gears in a different spot than where you see it with ERS) My head tech tried to give mine an update so it would show the current gear and he was reading from a book that showed it would do it, but it didn't do it. Last time I asked about it he just laughed like it is not going to happen. He may have checked with FCA and was told it will not update it now. Since I learned of seeing it in ERS I have done that, but of course you have to do it every time you start in forward motion, but at least it does give me an idea what is going on when going forward.

I know I don't need to see current gear, not anymore. I've spent enough time looking at current gear vs RPM vs speed while on road trips that I can tell. Well not for the lower gears, but for 7-8-9 it's easy.
