Question HID Lights Installed.

Hi guys I installed my XD xtreme (9005) kit on my 2016 TH last nite. It all went well I installed them from the bottom, no warning lights on the dash or anything. On a quick test drive I noticed that there is a long strip that is a dead on the driver side??? I wonder if I installed the bulb upside down or something ? On the last two pics you can see the dead spot on the driver side.

Edit: The only thing I did not install was the rear dust covers I will make the holes today to run the wires thru it.

Hey there,

Congrats on the install !

Sorry I'm not familiar with the 9005s as I have the 9012 kit (2015 KL). All I know is the dead spot has been corrected on the XD 9012 xenon bulbs. I know this because mine have no dead spot and one XD rep mentionned they had fixed it, here on the forum.

Having said that... I don't know about XD 9005 xenon bulbs. One question : do you have the XD bulbs or the optional Philips bulbs ?

One other member recently posted about his 9005 kit, having a dead spot, and correcting it by rotating the bulbs. Almost impossible to do with 9012 bulbs because of the one extra large tab, but perhaps it's easier with 9005s.

I'm sure the XD team can answer your questions also. Just PM them or give them a call...

That dead spot is most likely caused by the wire that runs down the length of the bulb. Check the orientation of the bulb on the passenger side and Try rotating the bulb on the driver's side to match, it should correct it.

Yeah it's caused by the wire. I believe they fixed the 9012s by positionning the wire at the bottom when the bulb is in place. Since 9012s can't be rotated without some serious tab trimming and tinkering, this was absolutely needed. Let's just remember that these projectors throw with a mirror effect, so the wire being positionned down (6 o'clock) means the dead spot will actually be at 12 o'clock so above the cutoff and not a factor.

For the record, the passenger side dead spot is actually there, but covered/drowned by the overlapping driver's side beam, which is why we don't see it.

The trick here would be to reposition/rotate the 9005s so they sit roughly one half turn from where they are now, to position the wire down. Hoping @XenonDepot can confirm

A little late to edit my above post so here I am with a little complement :

Just in case I wasn't clear enough about the dead spot : we see it in the above pictures at what... 8 o'clock-ish driver's side (and passenger side not visible - if bulb positionned the same way as driver side bulb).
So that means the wire is actually sitting at 2 o'clock inside the headlamp (the mirror thing). We want that dead spot anywhere above the cutoff, which means the wire needs to sit anywhere below horizontal inside the lamp. From 4 o'clock to 8 o'clock would be Ok, ideally 6 o'clock-ish (for a 12 o'clock dead spot).

I have the dead spot on my passenger side toward the right side of the road, I just haven't gotten to rotate the bulb yet to correct

Touché

Ok-Ok I remember... you probably have 9012s from the early batch, the ones that had a dead spot when installed normally. With a dead spot visible at lower right on passenger, the wire inside the bulbs were positionned at 10 o'clock (ish), and the driver's side dead spot was/is drowned out by the passenger side beam. This is what has been corrected with the newer batch of 9012s XD xenons.

Doesn't appear that the 9005s have received the same fix, yet, which would involve a different wire orientation when the bulb is actually put together on teh assembly line. I do think the 9005s are easier to rotate because of tab configuration, and you should proceed with caution rotating 9012s ; reason is that the wider tab is also very tall, and trimming can only (I think) be done for the width of the tab, not the height, because of how the bulbs are centered in the housing and how each tab's length is responsible for centering and making sure the bulb sits firmly inside the housing once in position. If any tab is trimmed on its height, I'm afraid the bulb would sit loosely in the housing afterwards. I'm just not sure which side of the wider tab requires a trim...
