SPOD + switch gang or Rasberry Pi + touch screen

I had been thinking about using a Rasberry Pi to trigger and control the various lights I plan on mounting to Hawkeye. Using it as a bit of a learn to code (or re-learn to code) project, with a touchscreen panel mounted where the SD/USB/12v power cord is.

The advantages of this are all control and power would be routed over a single cable run (or maybe two) if the Pi was mounted in the engine compartment. Disadvantages would be coding issues, how to trigger a safe shutdown of the Pi at power off of the Jeep, and I don't think any screens actually fit that space properly. That is, they are either too small or too large.

The other option was a sPOD, which I believe MFC is selling, alongside a machined switch gang designed to fit into that area and relocate the media and power ports as well. The disadvantage, his behaviour on this forum, and the rather abrasive way he treated some of the community.

I'd rather not support such behaviour unless it's the only option. Does anyone have a line into a similarly machined switch gang or sPOD control?

I used switch pros solution in mine and mounted the head unit in the upper sunglass holder. There is a for wire bundle that tires to the head unit and everything else is in the engine compartment.

I went with https://rockerswitchpros.com/, bought a 6 bank switch template and mounted it on the overhead console just in front of the MAP lights. All switches are custom as well so you can do what you want (add your own pictures, labels), my wires pass down the a-pillar behind the side airbag. As far as the Pi goes, that seems a little overkill if you're just controlling lights. I've been working on automating my home for the last 2 years with a combination of arduinos, pi, etc all working together. In the end, is it worth it to have an extra screen just for button for a light? You're turning a simple on/off job into something that needs to be parsed and processed by multiple components all relying on your programming and soldering, more chances of something failing. Just my opinion

Have you looked at the sPOD SE? Touch Screen or 8 Switch panel (2 types) talking CAN-Bus over a Cat5 cable. I've got the Touch Screen version.

i would advise against the switch panel for now until others roll out with it. it is not as machined cut as the website portrays it to be, a good portion of the switch panel is (poorly) cut by hand. it is a bit overpriced for the quality of the product you receive. if someone had a CAD drawing of the switch panel and could get it to someone who can properly machine a panel, that would be an entirely different story and i'm sure it would be very helpful!

Interesting idea, except I use my glasses holder. Glasses go in there! Maybe I'll look at getting the headliner cut to fit a switch bank.

I actually did this a few months ago, but ran into the shutdown issue which I now have a way to control just haven't been able to get back into the project.

Awesome! Thanks. I'm really surprised that the UConnect system isn't a commodity x64 CPU, or Pi. QNX has x64 kernels, and running a commodity CPU would allow rapid prototyping and/or updates to the hardware, OS and UI. Not to mention the ability to hack together a CANBUS controlled light system run directly from the Uconnect. Then there's the cost savings of using fully commoditized hardware.

Then by running on x64 hardware everything could be software defined (radios, etc) and relatively easily ported from one OS to another. Linux, especially, has a much better driver stack and availability than QNX, which needs everything ported or written for the hardware. It wouldn't help those of us with current vehicles, but future cars would benefit.
