Over Sand Trip Report - Assateague

OSV Trip report from Assateague, MD –

Getting a 1-year OSV permit is easy and straightforward. Just pick up at the ranger station when you drive in. Cost for a day-use permit is $90.

For the love of everything – if you go over sand make sure a) you have the skills and b) you have the gear.

Had to recover this Ford who 1) didn’t have operable 4x4, 2) didn’t weigh down the bed, 3) didn’t have recovery gear of any type though its required, 4) had no food or water, 5) had no skill set whatsoever (i.e. floored it while my buddy was digging out their tire) and 6)… just stood and watched us do all the work.

Worst part… while dragging them out, she cranked the wheel to the left bending my tow hook. Then they couldn’t get it moving without burying to the axel so… while dragging them down the beach the KL overheated. After sending them on their way after about an hour, had to pull off and let the passengers and KL cool down. (KL is in the show now for the hook and CEL)

But other than that, it was a great time. Saw a few other KLs out there all models, hanging in the sun, sand and surf. Camping was awesome as usual. Weather was great. Highly recommend for a fun day.

Recommendation: Go early. The beach is limited to 145 vehicles, with gates controlling access. Most folks will go out, set up camp, build a firepit and stay all day. Once the beach hits 145, its one-in-one-out so you might have to wait.

And don’t get suck AT the gate which we also saw...

That canopy from your roof rack is awesome! Is that custom, or commercially available?

Thanks man - its an ARB 2000. You can get it from Amazon - https://www.amazon.com/ARB-4x4-Acces...rds=ARB+awning

Its mounted to my Gobi rack with Gobi Awning Brackets, but there are plenty of folks who've attached the awning to other types of racks with numerous means.

Here is a thread about awning for your reading pleasure

At $275 it's not a horrible price, but I may try to make something like that. Looks like it would be fairly simple to build. I'll have to read that thread there. Thanks!
