It is likely meant to compete with the CX-3 and HRV, a popular segment where the Renegade has a hard time I think. No V6s in this category at all. These are more urban CUVs than anything else, while the Renegade tries to keep more SUV appeal.

I also think there is no room for an extra player of this size in the Jeep line-up. Sergio probably wants to milk the Jeep brand for all it's got, but this is too much and could only confuse buyers enough to send them elsewhere...
Or, make the Renegade in Trailhawk trim only, sorta like a mini Wrangler offering for the young crowd. But I have a feeling this wouldn't be feasible.

Totally agree, especially with just offering the Renegade in just TH trim and directing those that want a more Cute Ute to this new Compass/Patriot. But, wouldn't be surprised that they offer a TH version for this vehicle since the just included the GC. The question now is what is the Grand Wagoneer going to look like and will it get a TH version since Sergio is going to use that as a Range Rover fighter.

They're gearing up for a fight with VW in this sector

An Aussie article, but I've read a few Canadian ones as well stating that VW intends to launch several new SUV's in the next two years. It only stands to reason other manufacturers will also try to follow suit. Gotta stay with the curve.....

Rumor has it that the new Cherokee will have three rows and be slightly bigger than the current generation. But I agree that positioning the SUVs so closely together will result in market confusion.

The extended version is only for China:

The more likely option is launching the extended-length “K8” Jeep Cherokee, now intended only for China, as the Jeep Wagoneer. A high-trim model with all the luxury goodies, it would sit with a Grand Cherokee-based Grand Wagoneer. Cherokee and Grand Cherokee; Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer. It’s been done before.

Chrysler is no stranger to black roof options, I wouldn't say that they stole the idea from LR. the black roof won't be exclusive to the new ComPatriot by any means.

Looks like they put the WK2 headlights on the new Compass, I knew when I did that to my old one it might kind of look like the new generation Compass

Are we sure this isn't the 2018 Cherokee? THAT would make much sense.
