I think the new Compass styling is a stroke of genius. There's a large market segment out there that likes the look and luxury of the Grand, but does not like its gas-guzzling. The KL offers most of the Grand's luxury features with improved fuel efficiency, but Grand-lovers just can't stomach the KL's Angry Birds front-end styling. The Renegade's youthful, cute styling also doesn't work for the Grand crowd who take themselves and their rides more seriously. The new Compass is a sexy little Jeep that looks like a sexy big Jeep and it will sell like hotcakes, probably damaging the KL's sales more than Jeep's other models.

This is the look I was hoping the Cherokee was going to have. This style appeals to me instantly, I fall into the category you describe where the Renegade is too Toy-ish looking and the Cherokee front end does not appeal to me at all. My biggest concern is going to be the engine and how it moves it. There are going to be a lot of different engines for this but North America is only getting the Tigershark. Jealous of the markets getting the diesel.

I read in a different article max towing is going to be 2000 lbs. this because it will only be available with tiger shark engine? That disappoints me as in my mind my justification into looking to upgrade to a newer model when this was available was to get the OEM tow package and 4500 lbs capacity.

So do all of these models now fit into the standard categories?

Renegade: Sub-compact
Patriot/Compass: Compact
Cherokee: Mid size
Grand cherokee: Full size

It sure seems to me like they overlap too much.
