They went FWD with the first new beetle in 1998. They're all based on the Golf platform these days.
I can vouch for the quality of the platform though, they are very solid and quite entertaining to drive.

Not for me personally, but that is a nice color and a sweet ride!

I'm another original VW person - my first car was a '71 Karman Ghia - fun to drive and fun to work on. Had the engine bored out for oversize cylinders and kept that baby humming. Still miss it some weekends!
My wife also had a VW Passat Wagon (turbo) till a couple of years ago - fun car and quite practical. Also **** quick, surprised quite a few people when she chose to. However to an earlier comment above - part of the reason we got rid of it was the cost of repairs. VW parts and service seem to have just gotten astronomical, so we've steered away from them.

2015 Trailhawk
3.2 V6; Cherry Red; 17" Black Wheels; Black Interior; Ventilated Cow Seat; Trailer Tow Grp; Cold WX Grp; Tech Grp; Safety Grp; Comfort Grp; Pano Sunroof; Uconnect 8.4AN; 9x Speakers; and a Partridge in a Pear Tree!
Added: RRO Step-Rails; Rage Crossbars; Rage Stingray low profile roof cargo basket
Planned: Brush Guard w/ Winch (if I can de-conflict tech & airbags)

Ok... so I've a few opportunities to drive the Beetle at night. A bad idea for a halogen equipped KL driver... The bi-xenons on that little bug are fantastic. Relatively speaking of course since I haven't sampled more exotic HID systems (or the newer german adaptive LED systems). The difference in output and beam quality between this Bug and the halogen KL is almost sickening. Another point scored for VW : they've added a turning light feature (not sure if it's the fog lights yet) that come on with a set amount of steering angle and/or at a set speed with turning signal activated. The HIDs have a nice wide beam to begin with, so this feature only adds insult to injury for this KL driver...

On another note : the upgraded audio in the Jeep (9 speaker + sub option) wins easily over the upgraded Beetle audio by Fender (8 speakers + sub).

VW does do a fantastic job with their upgraded lighting packages (mostly bi-xenons, but LED is coming), some of their halogen packages have been just as big of stinkers as our KL's though. I know our old 2007 Golf City had horrible stock headlights.
