Weird. Very odd that Jeep is producing two vehicles that are almost identical in size.

I've read that the cargo area of the Compass is larger than our Cherokees.

While backing out into a busy street yesterday with the cross-path warning beep going off, I remembered all the tech and other stuff I've come to really appreciate with the Cherokee. And then there was the time I had to get on it to merge into an expressway and the lady in the back seat asked if it had a HEMI, lol. I'm ruined. While the Compass appears to be a good looking small UT and is getting good reviews, and will probably be a great global seller, it's not a Cherokee. There are a lot of differences including I can't tow it behind my motorhome unless it has a manual trans.

I think the compass will match up quite well with the I4 Cherokees. Obviously the V6 puts the Cherokee in a different class.

Seems to me like Jeep is shoehorning a vehicle in between the Renegade and the Cherokee for no reason. Just a weird business decision IMO.

The Compass has more interior space than our Cherokee and a not quite 3" longer wheelbase than the Renegade! Looks like it shares the Cherokee dash. The GC was never considered a full size SUV. The new Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer are going to be body on frame to compete with the Tahoe/Expedition and go upmarket to go up against BMW/Range Rover/Mercedes. I guess that these will be considered full size. If they use a Ram frame, they will be huge. If they come up with a smaller frame, they can bring back the Dakota.

I know one area where it makes sense, and that is the length. The Cherokee is 182in, the Grand Cherokee is 190in, and the Renegade is 166in. The Compass sits almost too perfectly at 174in. And since the Patriot is being discontinued, FCA feels there needs to be that slot filled, and the Compass is the one to do it in. But as others said, the Compass being sold at more markets and with the single engine keeps productions costs down, and comes off as a more luxury, and upscale version of thee Renegade, while still slotting it below the Cherokee (which is not only more off-road capable, but has the V6 option as well).

I think it ultimately works in the scheme of things, and I think it looks better than the Patriot. I personally prefer it over the Renegade, and if I had to choose between the two, I'd go for the Compass hands down.

Again, I think the Compass is going to do very well around the world. Agree with @Shoulder, I'd get the Compass before the Renegade.

While I need AD2/auto trans for towing behind a motorhome (manual trans is not available on Limited and TH), not everyone needs or wants to pay for anything other than a standard AWD or FWD. With BLD, that ups the game anyway. But where is the adaptive cruise control? The hardware is there (i.e. radar, camera, sensors, EPS, automatic braking). Seems like adaptive cruise control would be a matter of more buttons on the steering wheel and some software. BTW, crash rating for frontal is 3 out of 5 stars. The Cherokee can tow a small travel trailer; not so much with the Compass unless it's a teardrop camper or similar. Too bad they aren't built in the US too.

Doing a build comparison between the Cherokee and Compass for how I would configure them, the Compass comes in around US$5,000 less MSRP.
