I had to replace the side mirror on my last vehicle (pontiac). I started pulling out chunks of broken glass, then found that the whole mirror assembly was removable from the housing. With a little force I was able to pop out the mirror (glass and backing) from the housing and work with it from there. In my case I was able to go to the scrap yard and grab a whole new piece and just popped it in. Hopefully its the same in your case.

thanks, on this model it should pop out with the backing plate. you then separate the glass from the backing plate. re-install the backing plate onto the motors. then you snap the new glass onto the backing plate

did it. then we went car shopping for Wifey

required
  • extension cord
  • hair dryer
  • cpl sizes of flat screwdriver
  • flat bubble wrap and towel
  • eye glasses

procedure
  • heat up unit around edges
  • with screwdriver, pry off mirror glass unit from the outside edge to remove it from the mirror assembly on car
  • the backing plate is attached
  • disconnect heater wires (oops the new unit isn't heated, darn)
  • transfer 2 weird pins/clips from old backing plate, to the new unit
  • this requires heating the parts for more flexibility especially when the ambient temperature is 28 degrees
  • mirror should be face down on hard surface protected by bubble wrap & towel. press firmly & the clips click in (mini ball & socket joint x2)
  • attach new unit to mirror assembly on car, as hard as this sounds everything lines up easily
  • when all attachment points are lined up, press firmly using folded flat towel to protect surface of new unit, you will hear clicking for confirmation
  • when done, compare wiggle with existing unit on other side of car. if too loose all points are not connected, if same, you're done. final check with interior power switch to move left/right, up/down
