New Compass and Renegade Thoughts

http://www.jeep.com/reveal/index.html

I like the looks of the new Compass exterior. I think it looks much better than our Cherokee, if I may say. But, I do think that the Trailhawk badge is being watered down. A 20:1 crawl ratio is good now?? No locking rear differential. Smaller tires. Granted, it SHOULD out-do a CRV or Escape on a trail, but still I don't think it should be trail rated. I am waiting for a video of it doing something with rocks larger than what goes in a goldfish bowl.

For the Renegade, Jeep took away the 4x4 buyer's option with a manual transmission being in the lower trims. Not fair.

2015 Trailhawk - Eco Green, 3.2L, Nav, Tow, Cold Weather. MODS: Goodyear Wrangler All-Terrain ProGrades 245/70R17; WeatherTech mats, vent shades; Magnaflow exhaust. Rigid SR 20" bar and Rock Lights. JW Speaker fog lights. Blue Ridge Overland Gear panels and bags. Pelican tool box loaded! Bubba Rope and Gators too. Much more....

Trailer: Custom built Montrose aluminum 4.5'Wx6'Lx3'H off-road utility with 3,500 lb Dexter torsion axle. Known as the Zombie Escape Trailer.

From what I have gathered so far the new Compass has the same running gear as the Renegade. 9 speed with a simulated low by locking it into 1st gear at 20 to 1 ratio. With brake lock diffs front and rear. It has better approach and break over angles due to its shorter nose and shorter wheel base than the Cherokee and that is its only advantage. I t looks like a Renegade wearing a baby Grand Cherokee body. I like the looks but no true locker no true low range, no v-6 option. The question is the Trail Rated Badge, to get it it first must meet the approach, break over, and departure angles, flex and water fording. The last is a test over the Rubicon Trail. If the trail is getting easier to complete than in the past I son't know. It will out do any other CUV that is not a Jeep. I will give it some slack just like what a Wrangler owner might do for us Cherokee TH. It is not a Cherokee and just made the trail rated badge rating but it is doing a different job in a different segment. I might get one as a second car but for railroading I will keep my TH

Oversaturation. Curious to see how this all works out for the Dealers. Seems to almost be three Jeeps competing with each other for the sale. I like the individualist look of our Cherokee; I pray that a midlife refresh does not add a GC front, as is on the Compass.

Not bad looking and I had checked the dimensions a few weeks ago and very similar to my Patriot and probably the current Compass. I like my current Patriot (2015) since it has been on the road since 2007 and so far no problems so probably not going to be getting a new Compass. I think they are being manufactured in Brazil, Mexico, India and China. My Cherokee is about the correct size for my wife and I and the Patriot is not bad either so its not the size that will keep me from one. Give them a couple of years or so and I might change my mind.

I agree. The current Cherokee design now seems out of place and I'm betting it'll get a facelift to fit with the rest of the fleet. The new models look good, but I still think the current KL looks better. We might have lucked out getting a 2017.

Both don't have real 4x4 locking rear diffs and no V6 in Compass. The Renegade is meant to be a entry level Jeep, the Compass is somewhat an upgrade but, same capabilities.

The KL with the V6 and true locking rear diff is in a league of its own, better than the competition for off roading, even in lower trims, the only down size is cargo capacity but, that is dependent on what you are buying the vehicle to carry.
