Cherokee Diesel in the works

The Jeep Cherokee diesel will make its European debut at this year’s Geneva Motor Show Sporting the automaker’s new 2.0-liter turbocharged diesel engine.

The all-new Jeep Cherokee went on sale in the U.S. last year but will now be heading to Europe with its nine-speed automatic transmission. The turbo diesel engine will be available in two forms one with 170 hp and another with 140 hp. Only the 170-hp engine is mated to a nine-speed transmission while the 140-hp variant is paired to a a six-speed manual transmission. To improve fuel efficiency and CO2 emissions, both powerplants use stop-start technology.

The European Jeep Cherokee lineup will also get the 3.2-liter Pentastar V6 engine with a nine-speed automatic transmission with 272 hp and 232 lb-ft of torque. In Russia and the Middle East, the Jeep Cherokee will also be offered with a 2.4-liter Tigershark MultiAir four-cylinder engine.

The Jeep Cherokee received the Euro NCAP five-star rating last year with an overall score of 83 percent. The Jeep Cherokee will be introduced to European dealerships during the second quarter of 2014 and will be available in three trim levels: Longitude, Limited and Trailhawk.

Interesting that Jeep chose to call the European model Longitude rather than Latitude....

We knew there was a diesel for Europe. Did I miss the part that said it was coming to North America?

I was upset at first until I read nothing about it coming to NA. Also, not much Horsepower. I'm sure it'll have great torque though as a diesel but still the HP numbers are disappointing.

A diesel though with that 15.8 gallon tank would be near unstoppable as a commuter machine.

Do someone read what is the towing capacity associated to the 170hp diesel version? I love the 4500lbs of the Pentastar, but a diesel with the same capacity would be even more interesting (accepting the 100 less horse power).

Posting horsepower ratings but not torque in a review of a diesel motor is just plain irresponsible.

Most diesels have lower HP but higher torque.
The new v6 eco diesel Dodge is putting in the 1500 ram has 65 LESS HP than the 3.6Pentastar
but 120ft/lbs MORE torque which is more than the Hemi does. It gives it the same tow rating
as the V8 with a much smaller engine and better MPGs.
Depending on your end-usage a diesel might be a viable option for many.

a 170hp turbo diesel should have sufficient towing capacity for at least 3500lb if not 4500lb and better fuel economy than the 3.2. Have driven many 3, 2.8, 2.5, 2.4, 4.2L Turbo Diesel's from Japan and they are amazing vehicles. My current has a 3L 240hp Turbo Diesel with 406lbs of torque so this 170hp one should be around the 300 or 300ish lbs of torque which is better than the Cherokee 3.2L.

ie here are the specs on a JDM Hilux Surf Turbo Diesel(4-Runner) although it has a 3L KZN185 engine as a comparison

Max.power (Net), kw(PS)/rpm 140 ps (102.97 kw) / 3600 rpm
Max.torque(Net), N*m(kg*m)/rpm 34.0 kg*m (333.43 N*m) / 2000 rpm
