Finally (re-)done with home network.

Multiple evolutions from consumer access points and other network equipment. Also started with a VM server (Xen), but migrated to an 8-blade chassis server but ended up with individual PCs because it's actually easier to manage with a KVM and they are 1/2 the power consumption and 4x the CPU as ancient blade server.

Now everything is Gigabit switched with dedicated firewall, VPN, DMZ, etc. Also have an Obi adapter to convert Google Voice/calls to analog/wireless headset and a Vera Z-wave adapter for a part of my home automation. The 12TB NAS is for local storage and the 20TB NAS is for backups.

I still need to migrate some apps around, but the wiring is finally done and all the physical pieces put together. Also need to finish up the cable management.

Cables are a bit cleaner now, but a lot of the equipment isn't rackable so the cable management is painful. There's still some more cleanup to do, but there's a point of diminishing returns.

And I thought I had an impressive setup. Argh. Mine got fried Friday due to a power surge. Took out everything attached to my router. NAS, router, tivo, desktop... insurance is covering it but its 9000$ in damage so far.

Looks really like you have completed a master piece, but just like I am tone deaf when I give a person a good report for singing, I can do no better for you as I still think a "bit" is something I just "bit" on and ate.

Yeah... @SkipW, securing is easy.
Log into your router with a web browser (most use 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 that you just stick into the address bar and hit Enter).
Change the default password which is often just admin for most routers. Change for something else, but not 1234 lol.
Then, in the Wireless Security section, set WPA2 as security protocol, and enter your security key (known as wi-fi password to most of us).
All set
Oh and write those down..

Yikes !!! Did the power surge run from the Internet cable > modem > router > everything else ?

Everything attached to one surge protector and then everything hardwired with ethernet got toasted on one form or another.

But since I didn't replace my surge protector after the last power outage they wouldn't cover it. So I just filed with my renters insurance.

I am absolutely anal about my cable management. Not to thread hijack, but my entertainment center consists of a 70" Vizio M series, a surround sound system, Bluray player, laptop, and DirecTV box. It is a glass 3 tiered table with a black spine for the tv to mount to. You can see zero wires when sitting on the couch, which is especially difficult with a glass entertainment center
