In some respects, today's manual vs. auto is somewhat reminiscent of the film vs. digital debates I've heard all about.

In the case for Porsche with its PDK, the gap I think becomes a bit narrower. Performance magazine several years ago had two separate articles, one for manual, and one for PDK, and you also had people sending in their comments about it. There's a definite positive for both sides, and it was very interesting hearing what people were saying on both manual and PDK.

My personal opinion however is partially why I still love and will continue to own and drive my Mini: Manual transmission. And being a 1st gen Cooper S with the supercharged engine, it's one of the most satisfying cars I've ever driven. I once drove a 2nd gen cooper S (now turbo-charged at this point), and this one had the automatic. Sure, it was plenty fast for what it was, and it still handled great (also the build quality was better, and was more refined), but that manual feeling in such a small car is one of the things that made the car so much fun. I suspect that's partially why my brother sold his Mini after only a year, and yet I still own mine after nearly 11 years. Egan, you're not being let go just yet.

Auto with Paddle shifters. If there are no paddle shifters, manual. Autos now days can shift faster then a manual and once you include paddle shifters, you don't have to take your hands off the wheels. When you are going around a corner barley handing on, the last thing you want to do is release the wheel to shift. My Mitsubishi Lancer and BMW 335i had paddle shifters. Both were great and when you are going around the track at 100+mph, an easy up shift is finger away.
