Bikers stole 150 Jeeps with hacked keys

The article only talks about the Wrangler, but I'm sure it could be done to the Cherokee. Another security update will be inbound I bet.

Kind of a misleading title. Unfortunately, any vehicle is vulnerable to this kind of attack. The thieves somehow gained access to dealerconnect which allows them access to the tumbler code. additionally, a laptop with the login to WiTech is required to program the key. the tl;dr version is that they got an FCA dealership employee's login (probably a parts or service employee) and used it to make a new key for the car. no real update can fix this. you could do the same with a kia, mercedes, chevrolet, honda, etc. with the right access.

agreed this wasn't really a "hack" but more of a security breach....

So for this old timer, "hacking" has changed from using a hack saw to steal to "misusing a computer" to steal. Both are equally wrong, just bigger hauls for the modern "hacker" and hopefully longer jail time if caught.

Wranglers have an assigned Key Code and PIN. KL's PIN is only good for 24 hours after retrieving from Dealer Connect. I would not be concerned.
